Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
